CONSTRUCTION BOOKS
.
“The VISUAL HANDBOOK of Building and Remodeling” – A comprehensive reference book focused on residential house construction. The chapters are broken down by systems (framing, siding, plumbing, wiring), as well as design considerations (site, climate, passive solar, sound, etc). Each chapter is followed by relevant building code topics, as well as tips and pointers. The book’s strength lies in its excellent illustrations, as well as in the shear volume of examples. Many of the details are quite useful (e.g. foundation wall and siding details). This publication is packed with usable information, and is a good value for the money.

“INSULATE and WEATHERIZE” - A good balance of theory and practice. A concise, clear refresher on topics such as heat transfer principles, moisture control, etc, combined with practical tips and strategies for retrofitting an existing house, optimizing mechanical heating equipment, sealing air leaks, selecting windows, etc. My favourite section by far was the chapter on insulating an old existing house without removing neither the exterior siding nor the interior dry wall.
